Health insurance has become a norm in developed countries like the US. Infact, the US government mandates all employers who have 50 or more employees to provide a health insurance to all their employees.

But India didn’t have any such mandate or regulations. With the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian government started taking initiatives to ensure that the entire population of India has some sort of health insurance. On that front, the government announced on April 4th 2020 that the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana would cover all treatments of Covid-19.

On April 15th 2020, the government took another bold step towards that goal of getting the Indian population insured. The government of India, as part of order №40–3/2020-DM-I (A), issued as part of the consolidated revised guidelines by ministry of home affairs, made it mandatory for all employers, who resume functioning post COVID-19 lockdown in the country, to provide medical insurance to their employees. As per clause 5 of Annexure — II of the revised guidelines and standard operating procedure for social distancing for offices, workplaces, factories and establishments, medical insurance for the workers is to be made mandatory.

In addition, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued a guideline asking all general and standalone health insurers to offer comprehensive health insurance policies either to individuals or groups in order to enable the listed organisations/employers/establishments comply with the government of India directives. It also specified that organisations should continue the medical insurance policy not only for the present situation but for all time.

At Plum, we have created best-in-class health insurance plans that comes with no hidden clauses and no sub-limits. The plans covers all pre-existing conditions from day 1, covers maternity from day 1, and offcourse, covers all treatment of Covid-19 (and any other pandemic for that matter).

In addition, we have simplified the buying process for the busy HR and the founders. The plans come with a pre-negotiated price that ensures that you don’t spend time on negotiating. All you need to do is share a few details of your organization, submit documents, make payment, and voila — your insurance cover kicks in on the same day.

Your employees get a modern experience, wherein they can use the Plum app to understand their coverage and use their insurance. They also get a Plum Care to help them with claims.

If you are organization that hasn’t set up a health cover yet for your employees, this is good time for you to start taking care of the health of your team, and give your team a peace of mind.

With this bold step, India has again leap-frogged US and a lot of other countries when it comes to healthcare. With Ayushman Bharat, the government aims to cover 500 million+ population. And with the new regulation, the government is hoping that organizations can take care of the rest of the working population on India. We would love to hear your thoughts on what you think about this step. Please share your thoughts and comments.
