Error Correction for Digital Assets
Today, we are here to talk about Error Correction. What’s error correction?
In the world of computer science, there’s a concept called error correction. This is used when computers save information but occasionally make small mistakes. To fix these errors, we use something like a helper bit of data for every few bits of main data.
This helper bit can detect if there’s a mistake. It’s similar to understanding a word even if it’s misspelled, or being able to play music from a scratched CD. The damage is there, but we can read around it.
There’s no way to avoid certain damages. You may be able to prevent them to a certain extent, but there’s no certainty.
In the realm of finance, insurance works in a similar way as these helper bits.
You pay an extra fee for insurance so that if something bad happens, you won’t lose everything. But, as anything, it’s all about finding the right balance and the right fit. If you have too much insurance, you’re wasting money. But if you have too little, you could suffer a significant loss.
The goal of a good insurer, when dealing with things like NFTs (which are unique digital items), should be to prevent loss from happening in the first place. This means taking different actions:
- First, adding in-user safeguards. Preventive actions to ensure there’s no loss.
- Of course, covering for the worst eventualities. If a loss does occur, they aim to provide some form of compensation based on the insurance policy.
- Finally, there’s an informative and transparent side; They can also inform everyone if an NFT or any digital asset is stolen. This simple action can help lower the resale value of stolen items, making it less attractive for people to steal and promoting safety in the digital space.
We have to keep in mind, this isn’t like traditional insurance. It’s not. We’re dealing with new and different kinds of digital assets and all sorts of digital stuff. We’re working at the cutting edge new technology, definitely a place where we can be extremely creative.
