6 Reasons Why Crypto Marketing is Like Playing Candy Crush
I have always been a Candy Crush fan and have never gotten bored playing this game. Candy Crush is a popular game across all ages and has successfully received more than 2.7 billion downloads. This game relaxes your mind and gives you an energy boost when you are too tired to do anything else.
Well, as most of you know, I am a fan of crypto too!
Just like Candy Crush the game, crypto has become a craze! I have seen numerous similarities between my favourites — both the game and the industry that I work in… I have taken the liberty to pen down 6 reasons why I think crypto marketing is just like playing Candy Crush.
1. There is a strategy and end goal when playing Candy Crush, similar to crypto marketing.
The goal for playing Candy Crush is about winning and leveling up to the next stage. It’s all about the strategy from creating fish candies, to combining striped candies and making the strategic move on your candies to create the necessary special grouped candies to win the game.
In crypto marketing, the marketing strategy is the backbone of an organisation in establishing an edge over its competitors and to stay top-of-mind amongst its audience. The strategy helps in developing the unique selling proposition with the end goal to obtain the best revenue profit through key sales and marketing messages to the audience.
Crypto marketers are tasked to use various communication strategies to constantly educate traders on different ways to enhance their trading journey and reduce daily risks.
2. Candy Crush is addictive and so is trading derivatives!
Anyone who has played Candy Crush before knows how addictive this game can be. You only get 5 lives to do your best and survive in the game. When you’ve used up all of your lives you will need to wait for a full 20 minutes before your 5 new lives are restored.
Let’s take a look at the crypto markets and how this is related to the game. Crypto derivatives are on the rise. Tokeninsight indicated that the trading volume of the cryptocurrency-derivatives market for the second quarter of 2020 was $2.159 trillion (based on data from 42 exchanges). This is an increase of 2.5%from the previous quarter and a year-on-year increase of 165.5% from the second quarter of 2019.
Investopedia explains that derivatives trading is used to hedge a position, speculate on the directional movement of an underlying asset, or give leverage to holdings. Their value comes from the fluctuations of the values of the underlying asset. This makes trading derivatives very addictive because you are in full control of your funds and trading decisions.
Traders are at risk when they are too engaged in derivative trading and do not know when to stop. Greed naturally grows if you are unable to balance your emotions when trading and when there is an overflow of emotions, this leads to losses. Hence, traders need to trade intelligently and make wise decisions before, during, and after launching each trade.
Crypto marketers play an important role in educating traders on the best trading practices through various channels. At Overbit, we identify traders' desirable behaviours and educate them about crypto. We communicate with traders through blog articles to explain what derivatives trading is about. Video marketing is engaging and we use video marketing as part of Overbit’s strategy to showcase smart trading practices interactively. The Beginners' guide or the support guide is often the best start for new traders who are often in need of help guides as they embark on this new trading journey.
3. Candy Crush’s bombs are scarce and so is Bitcoin — the digital currency!
We all know that scarcity creates value and Candy Crush’s scarcity lures the player to keep playing and to go up to the next level — creating the excitement to keep on playing 24/7, 365 days a year!
Investopedia explains that the scarcity principle is an economic theory that explains the price relationship between dynamic supply and demand.
It goes the same way with Bitcoin! When Satoshi Nakamoto first launched Bitcoin in 2009, the supply of Bitcoin tokens was capped at 21 million.
According to Overbit’s blog, on Saturday, 26th September, the prominent bitcoin account ChartBTC, tweeted that Bitcoin has recently passed the 18.5 million mark for the total circulating supply. There are only 2.5 million BTC left to be mined and half of this remaining supply will be mined within the next four years! That’s just under 12% of Bitcoin’s total supply left to be mined.
So what does this all mean to the crypto marketer and on Bitcoin and the future?
Due to Bitcoin’s scarcity, there is always a demand for this coin and the marketer generates updates on the supply of Bitcoin and its pricing volatility. That is why Overbit shares thought leadership content to our traders to keep them abreast of the latest happenings and news.
Here is an example of a recent podcast conducted by Charlie Shrem and Chieh Liu, CEO of Overbit as they spoke about the secrets of crypto trading!
4. Facing your giants, obstacles and hard levels is an everyday affair in both playing Candy Crush and marketing crypto.
In order to succeed and complete a Candy Crush level, you need to get rid of obstacles such as chocolate, chocolate spawners, candy bombs, five-layered frosting, and the list goes on! You are laboured to move one-by-one to clear the path to complete the game. This is often frustrating for the player and sometimes fuels anger as the player gets drawn deeper into the game.
Emotions are the worst enemy, when it comes to trading and Overbit does not want its traders to feel frustrated when trading on its platform. So setting the foundation of the marketing vision and its execution to capture every opportunity you have when communicating with your traders is essential planning.
Crypto marketing obstacles come in many forms and shapes. Obstacles start from confusing product positioning, unclear messaging, and when fear creeps in procrastination!
Start by looking at the gaps in your marketing plan. It may be your content strategy that needs some rejigging or you are not targeting the correct personas of your target audience. This can easily be solved by conducting a survey to understand the consumer behaviour of traders. This is an example of a survey, conducted for Overbit across 5 continents, 90 countries, and 2500 traders to help the team understand the personas of traders better.
When your crypto marketing is not delivering results, take a breather and a step back to look at your marketing strategies with fresh eyes again. Brainstorm with the team and your bosses on the challenges that you are facing and as a unified team, work together to find solutions.
Implementing different types of measurement methods in your campaign is an important factor when checking in with your goal. A marketer needs to set-up a system to measure and predict the success of a campaign before a brand launches to see where resources and efforts should be at.
Some basic measurement tools that marketers can use are google analytics, SEO ranking, and putting in place a set of measurement metrics for your social media channels. If you are interested in reading a recent article which I have written on this topic, please feel free to check it out here.
5. Candy Crush is free to download and you can trade on a demo account for free too!
Candy Crush is free to download and free to play, no credit card transactions are needed!
“FREE” is the first most persuasive word according to Entrepreneur.com. Why? Simply because the word “FREE” creates appeal and a connection or a relationship.
Being a smart trader is often having the discipline to balance between being adaptable, disciplined, and risk-averse. Very often tools are needed for them to practice and make their trades better. The more tools they use, the more confident they become in their trades and become smarter traders!

6. Growth of like-minded communities is essential for both Candy Crush and derivatives trading.
Everyone who plays Candy Crush, has only one end goal — which is to successfully go to the next level and emerge as winners!
Candy Crush is viral. Their players obtain Candy Crush information from reviews and gaming community sites and even from the Facebook community for example Candy Crush Saga Facebook group boasting 148K members in the group. These groups function as a community to share, join, post something related to the game and most importantly have fun!
It is the same with crypto marketing. “Social-mingling” is important in this space as traders want to participate and be part of what other traders have. Crypto traders all have the same common goal as well when they start trading — they want to make money!
Crypto marketers need to supply traders with resources to help them trade better. There are many other ways to educate traders other than using a Demo Account as per the above’s pointer.
Here are some other ways for traders to glean and apply the best trading practices into their trades!
Firstly, research and join telegram crypto groups that are beneficial such as CoinTelegraph for crypto news or CoinGecko for market cap announcements. Alternatively, traders can also follow different trading platform announcement channels for the latest happenings and events.
Traders can also follow influencers who are movers and shakers of the crypto industry as they often publish insights and opinions of this space. Overbit encourages traders to subscribe and listen to interviews to better understand the crypto market landscape.
YES! Playing Candy Crush is indeed like crypto marketing — filled with colours, fun, and satisfaction.
As we draw to a close, Candy Crush implements different strategies such as paid ads and creates groups to share virality within their members with the objective to create fun and colour in the lives of its subscribers. Candy Crush is viral and this creates FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) making this game highly addictive.
Crypto marketing on the other hand is the process of understanding what a trader appreciates and values so that the trader is always a happy camper. When the trader is happy, he or she will organically be motivated to create word-of-mouth to share the positive experiences with the trading platform.
As shared earlier, crypto marketing strategies that are specific and offer quality content to traders are considered successful tools in creating customer satisfaction. Traders are the heartbeat of the business and we want to ensure that their trading experiences are seamless from start to end.
There really isn’t a specifically formulated formula on how best to create the perfect crypto marketing strategy for your organisation or campaign. The sky has no limits, so just keep trying and carry on in your marketing strategies till you find what suits you best! You only fail when you stop trying!
Life itself is a maze, so enjoy the little things. I end with this, crypto marketing is audacious and great fun! There is never one day that is ever the same in the crypto world! So, go one step at a time! 🚀
