Who are Pluto Labs?

Pluto was founded to improve the way research papers are published. Currently, funding for research is provided by the government or research institutions, and researchers not only come up with ideas and conduct research but also validate their work through peer reviews. However, academic publishers receive most of the profits from the circulation of papers, which distorts the industry structure. This adds intermediaries to the process of exploring and distributing new ideas, greatly increasing the cost of communication for researchers and indirectly increasing the funding required for new scientific research.

We were founded at first to address various issues related to the distribution of copyright revenue in academic papers and the inefficient review process, and we attempted to solve these problems using blockchain technology. During the development process of the product, we realized that many data infrastructures related to papers were not established.

We then set our company’s primary goal to establishing a data infrastructure related to publications. In this direction, we have built metadata databases for publications and developed a search engine for academic papers. Despite the development of many information systems in modern times, the system for delivering academic information still heavily relies on published papers. Despite the advancement of internet-based communication tools, papers are circulated in a format (PDF), comparable to printed materials. Due to its similarity, researchers often have to read most of the paper to confirm information.

We will extract information from individual papers and transform it into machine-readable data, and based on this data, we will build a new database. Through such databases, researchers no longer need to invest a lot of time searching for specific information in papers, but also quickly identify links between existing data that was previously difficult to find and derive insights from relevant information.

Scinapse does not pursue a simple search engine that requires checking individual papers but pursues Research Intelligence that allows easy confirmation of content through the analysis of all papers. We believe that it is highly inefficient to skim through an entire paper just to check if it contains specific information, especially since the information we typically seek is spread across multiple papers rather than being contained in a single paper. This requires more time and effort to confirm.

What kind of changes are we trying to bring about based on this tool?

• Initially, the aim is to significantly reduce the time researchers spend reading papers.
• Through the above process, we aim to enable researchers to spend more time on experiments and creative activities.
• Additionally, the aim is to facilitate interdisciplinary research and accelerate collaboration among researchers by enabling quick verification of research results from other fields.
• Along with these changes, we also aim to enhance the usability of research data itself to a new level.

There is a lot of information in a research paper besides research-related information, and analyzing such information can provide various industry-related insights.

• Through analysis, as the visibility of research-related information increases, it is expected to enable non-researchers to easily obtain research information in any field. Accordingly, the following are expected to be possible:
• Verification of various scientific information in the media
• Tracking the flow of national research project funds
• Analysis of differences in research methods by country
