HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Scinapse!

The 19th of January was the first anniversary of Scinapse.

So far, we have tried various updates in Scinapse to serve researchers with better discovery and better user experience, and we will continue to make more trials in 2019.

Today, I share the updates of Scinapse in January.

Author page

🔎 Added the CV feature to Author page

In the last update post, we shared the update about “Author-it’s me” of Author page. So far, all the information we had in Author pages were their publications. “Author-it’s me” was updated last month to enable our verified users to organize their Author pages by managing their publication lists and select representative publications.

To make these Author pages more informative its viewers (and to let users do as such), we improved it so that verified users can add more information. Now researchers who were verified can add information about their careers such as education, experiences, and awards.

This feature is like the CV of a researcher. We thought that Author pages of Scinapse could play a similar role as Linkedin in the research community.

Unfortunately, we are still testing this feature as a closed beta version. If you want to test the beta, please contact us.

Search feature

🔎 Updated Author name search

Now you can search with author names!
This update was made to make inflows of users with updated Author pages and give users a better search result.

This feature is updated in phases, and the first update had been completed.

  • How the first update works: When a user searches for a keyword related to author name, Search results page shows at the top 2 authors based on the exact match and the number of papers. Of course, below them users can still check the paper results related to their keyword.
  • In the second update, we will add a tab which shows only the results of the authors in Search results page.

🔎 Enhanced keyword suggestion: Scinapse got smarter!

Depending on the keyword users searched for, Scinapse can recognize the typo and recommend the keyword or the result. This update is divided into two cases.

  • Did you mean this?
Did you mean this?

When Scinapse has results about the search keyword but suspects that the keyword is a typo, the sentence “Did you mean [modified keyword]?” is displayed.

For example, if a user searched for a keyword “papre”, Scinapse shows the results about “papre” and recommends the keyword “paper”.

  • Showing results for this
“p%20wrieght” modified into “p weight”

When Scinapse has no results about the search keyword and suspects that the keyword is a typo, Scinapse shows the results for a modified keyword and displays the sentence “Showing results for [modified keyword]”.

Collection

🔎 Added pagination in Collection page
🔎 Added searching in-Collection

pagination in Collection page / searching in-Collection

We’ve found from the analysis of usage patterns that more than 10 papers were often saved in one collection. In the most dramatic case, 238 papers were saved in a single collection.

So we added pagination and search features Collection page. Papers are displayed 10 units per page, and users can immediately find papers within the collection with the search box inside Collection page.

🔎 Added sorting in Collection page

Now, papers saved in the collection can be sorted by the following criteria:
Recently added; Most citations; Newest; Oldest

This update is inspired by a user feedback. One of our users wanted the feature, who saved a lot of papers on a particular subject and then wanted to screen the papers by sorting them with citation counts.

Because it is actually a requirement of users who are using Scinapse, we LOVE updating with feedback! If you have any idea, please share it through feedback button at the bottom right of the Scinapse.

🔎 Added “Share button” to collection

Collections can be shared via URL. But this may not seem obvious to our users since making a Collection requires sign-up. So we made the share button to appeal to the users intuitively. We hope that this will enable active sharing of collections.

ETC

🔎 Enhanced keyword highlight

keywords highlighted

When users search in Scinapse, the results are displayed with matching keywords highlighted in bold texts. Before this update, the highlighting algorithms were implemented in the front-end (i.e. client side) of the service. Now the back-end, or server-side, handles this, and as a result Scinapse could show more accurate results.

🔎 Improved SEO(Search Engine Optimization) in Paper show page

Before
After

SEO is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results — often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results.

Google’s search results on Scinapse pages had unorganized data, including many components of Scinapse that are not necessarily core contents of the specific page. We’ve made updates to improve visibility through well-organized metadata.

STAY TUNED

These pretty much sums up the changes made in Scinapse during the first month of 2019. Keep your eyes on, and watch what’s coming up next!
