In today’s business world, data is a valuable tool for decision-making, and databases are used in every aspect of it.

Structured Query Language (SQL) is the most popular language used for manipulating data from a database, and understanding SQL can empower Product Managers (PMs) to gather data and generate reports and analyses without bothering the engineering team.

SQL is a domain-specific language used for managing data held in a relational database management system (RDBMS) or for stream processing in a relational data stream management system (RDSMS). The acronym CRUD (Create, Retrieve, Update, and Delete) refers to managing data in a database. PMs will be interested in the ability to retrieve the information needed from the database that corresponds to the letter “R” of CRUD, and querying the database to generate a result set.

MySQL and PostgreSQL are popular open-source databases. Both databases are RDBMS, where each table is known as a relation, and data is organized by columns, tables, and records. PMs can use SQL to measure results and set metrics without involving the engineering team. They can query the database to retrieve information, and the result set is the answer to the query.

SQL queries can be used to find information such as a list of bank customers eligible for a new credit card, count and total sum of credit card transactions for each customer aggregated daily, top five merchants used by customers monthly, and last month’s ten largest credit card transactions in descending order.
