Paaji, what is this remote work ?
The Paaji series from PnP Chat is a journal of penned down blogs themed around, two curious paaji’s (people) having a quick chat about ideas, startups, technology and the buzz around it all. This is one such conversation between two paaji’s who are trying to understand a remote-first organisation. You can also get insights on their conversation about the impact of technology on the cable TV business.
Remotely working or remote-first organisations are companies that are built around the ideology that one doesn’t need an office or fixed and monitored work hours to carry out one’s job. People working with a remote-first organisation can work from a place that inspires their creative senses or pushes them towards being productive or basically from any nook and cranny that brings out the best in them. Some of these organisation might even have an office space yet most of their workforce is spread across geographies. For instance we at PnP Labs are headquartered at Chandigarh but our workforce functions out of Chandigarh, Bangalore and Delhi NCR.

Paaji, no office means no work.
When you have a remotely working workforce, you start to focus on what’s truly important. One’s work alone becomes the yardstick to judge one’s performance. When you can’t monitor someone all day long, the only thing you have to yourself as a judging parameter is to evaluate the quality of their work. The other way to look at this is by enabling a more flexible work schedule, you create an atmosphere where employees can be excited about their work. Ultimately it would lead to more hours being put into work, with those hours being even more productive.
Paaji, managing must be overwhelming.
Remote work culture’s core ideology stems from the fact you don’t need a manager to “peek over your shoulder” or daily meetings to get you to work. This is a real paradigm shift in the style of working for a lot of people. Transparency, personal accountability and communication are the 3 pillars for an effective remote culture and with tools like Google Drive, Skype, Slack, JIRA, Bitbucket, etc “managing” become far more easy.

Paaji, this remote culture seems interesting
To add a cherry on top of the cake, remote organisation are cost effective and phenomenally optimized because there is no infrastructure cost to set-up and maintain an office space. Not only this, but also remote work gives you the opportunity to work with smart and passionate people from across geographies, time zones and cultures. It adds an element of cultural diversity and your learning moves beyond the encumbered space of your office, you truly start feeling like a global citizen.
