Marbecks Foodstore is part deli, part cafe and part specialty grocery store. As a contemporary interpretation of the ‘everyday larder’ or foodstores of old, it acts as a go between for those interested in popping in for a coffee and for those interested in adding a finishing touch to their meals.

Standing proud in the Meridian mall, the foodstore is a fresh approach to store design — showcasing both exotic compliments and local delectables amongst the latest in kitchen accessories and appliances.

PocketSmith sat down with Marbecks Foodstore to get the key ingredient to their success…

Tell us a little about why you moved to Dunedin, and how Marbecks Foodstore came to be.

I came to Dunedin to study Pharmacy and long story short, spent too much time at Marbecks as a customer. I loved it so much so I bought it!

What’s your favourite item on the Marbecks Foodstore menu at the moment?

We just launched our new summer menu under our head chef “Magic” Mike Harwood. We have gone for Americana favourites. Burgers, hot dogs, Pastrami Reuben, old school milkshakes etc. My favourite, though, is the Philly Cheese Steak — tender beef, finished off on the grill and topped with provolone cheese.

What is one thing you’d love your customers to know about the food you prepare?

We make pretty much everything from scratch — and working with the best ingredients from the best suppliers like our butcher Simon Teffenbach from Deep Creek Deli and Roger Kan for the best fresh produce from Wing On Supplies.

Do you have any culinary tips for those of us looking to cook something new this holiday season?

Pinot Noir Salt by Otago Salt Traders as a finishing salt for your creations — another local genius food producer.

Is there anything you do with money to prepare for the holidays?

Not really — just don’t stop working !

How do you feel about re-gifting?

Share the love! When you screw up with a re-gifting faux-pas, it can be as funny as it is embarrassing.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I get to eat what we make.

What’s your favourite item in the deli store at the moment?

It’s Christmas, so it has to be our Marbecks Christmas Ham — I’ve already eaten through one and I have my eye on another one for Christmas Day

What is your favourite Christmas movie?

Die-Hard (Original — which is still the best).

What is your best Secret Santa hack?

Repurpose some old junk from your garage.

PocketSmith’s Local Heroes are cultural touchstones that we think make the Dunedin community a better place. The series recognises each hero for all they have done, while giving them a chance to share their story with you.
