A big question among employers is how to manage their employee’s use of social media at the work place. Whenever you restrict something or make a rule it should have purpose and meaning. If an employer wanted to ban employees from using social media at work they should provide through reasons.

Good workplace culture can attract talented people to a company, but bad workplace culture can ruin the application pool and drive away valuable employees.

If workplace productivity is lagging and employers can directly link it to wasted time on social media then they should feel obligated to institute rules.

Twitter Assignment Reflection

I have never been a huge fan of Twitter, so participating in this assignment was difficult because I had to build Twitter into my routine. Twitter is a great way to send quick messages, promote content and directly engage with your followers but not every organization needs a twitter account.

If your organization is not promoting a new piece of content every two or three hours then you may not need twitter.

News organizations need a twitter account: NPR

They need to promote content to their followers because news is constantly changing. Using Twitter, news organizations can also provide minute by minute updates about ongoing events. These specific updates cannot be via Facebook and Instagram, because the algorithms on Facebook and Instagram do not always put timeline content in order of when it is posted.

Celebrates need a twitter account (or do they?) : Kim Kardashian

Twitter allows celebrates to interact one-on-one with their fans. Twitter allows fans a hour by hour update on what their favorite celebrity is doing, but Twitter might not be celebrate’s first choice anymore. Snapchat and Instagram stories seem to be the new platform used by celebrates to interact with fans.

I would never normally tell people to look to the Kardashian’s as a credible source, but that’s what I am going to do. The Kardashian’s represent a social media empire. Their main platforms are Instagram and Snapchat, because it allows fans the ultimate behind the scenes access to their lives. It’s a lot easier to talk to a camera and record your experience than it would be to tweet about it.

Businesses need a Twitter account (If they use it well) : Northwestern Mutual

Businesses provide services to consumers, and they use social media to advertise those services in a human way.

Northwestern Mutual uses video, photos and graphics to engage Twitter users to check out their products. They redirect Twitter users to their website to engage them in a section, of their site, that people would not normally seek out on their own.

If businesses use social media to daily promote their products then they have a need for Twitter.

Just because social media platforms exist does not mean that organizations need to have an account. Examine the audiences of each platform, the uses of each platform and the tones of each platfrom and then decide whether or not your organization needs to engage in this platform.
