So one of us, sigu , once told us of an upcoming GNOME release party for version 3.28. Here’s the thing, when a Kenyan hears anything to do with a ‘party’, all we think of is food and drinks. So it got us all excited. We looked forward to the fun, I mean there was gonna be food and drinks right?😄

Apparently there was more to the 3.28 release Party than we thought. sigu, one of our core team members took lead of the event. He organized a Time schedule for the day and reached out to people around who showed up and realized it was entirely worth it. The party took place on Saturday, 5th May 2018 from 9.00am.

We began with a brief introductory segment for people to get to bond and know each other, just so we wouldn’t all be strangers sited in the same room. Sigu then took to pitching the history of Linux and its predecessor versions like the Minix and Unix story, I can only remember as muchh. Distinctions between various desktop environments that most of us used to confuse with operating Systems were all well explained and laid out by this lad. You could see attendees take notes on pieces of paper since none of them carried notebooks, oh well how could they? It was a ‘party’!.😁

Point of surprise: Android is running Linux!!! I never expected, never imagined, never came close to thinking about this

So generally here are most of the things that were captured:

  • Linux distros e.g Fedora, OpenSuse, Ubuntu etc — long list on http://distrowatch.com website
  • The evolution of Graphical User Interface
  • X and Wayland window managers
  • Ubuntu updates release
  • GNOME History, Desktop environments and why we should use GNOME discussions
  • GNOME plugins or maybe they are called extensions, not sure but they are found at http://extensions.gnome.org/
  • Features of the latest GNOME 3.28, we went through the article by http://omgubuntu.co.uk which I now read on regularly
Yes, this is me — not the soda one :-)

And so much more. The lesson, discussions and question answering session took approximately four hours after which the ‘party’ part of the party began. We bought boxes of pizza, among other snacks and drinks. I can attest that none of us has ever eaten that much pizza in a span of an hour. They couldn’t even walk straight. We had to let the food sink in for a while.😂

It was a diverse learning experience and all fun at the same time.

Thank you GNOME 🙂
