Poem 1: Chanting about Cicadas in Prison with Prologue

- Luobin Wang

The cicadas sing on the western road,

The traveler in the south feels the longing goad.

The shadow of my graying hair,

Comes to meet the white-haired pair.

Heavy dew makes it hard to soar,

Rough breeze muffles its roar.

No one believes in my noble heart,

Who will speak for me, play the part?

Commentary

Mr. Wang became famous for his talent when he was young. He was imprisoned in middle age. This poem echoes the midlife crisis after being sent to prison.

在狱咏蝉并序

-骆宾王

西路蝉声唱,南冠客思侵。

那堪玄鬓影,来对白头吟!

露重飞难进,风多响易沉。

无人信高洁,谁为表予心?
