We grew up believing

In bread that wasn’t colored with caramel
In coca cola
In two cars in every garage
And a chicken in every pot
And pot being something
The bad kids on the bleachers smoked
At recess
We believed in reese’s pieces
In skittles
And gummy bears
In care bears
Who cared
And vegetables
At your tables
That didn’t taste like plastic
Fantastic
This was before
Kids
Were considered spastic
For having energy to spare
We believed in Truth or Dare
We didn’t sign up for summer internships
At fourteen
We took our time
And it took us
The cars were long and ran on gas
A lot of gas
(Well some things never change -
At least in America)
What a miracle
We thought
Two chickens now in every pot!
And then we found out how that chicken
Is bought
And sold
And raised and packaged
And we shuddered to think
What we were fed by Acme Inc.
