We consider Sun Ra’s dark sky and whether or not there is hope

Sun Ra said,
“the sky is a sea of darkness
when there is no sun
to light the way”

I think now to the sea of darkness
that lingers above subsets of the political south,
where protesters burn cities,
where sometimes-smog is a beacon of hope.

sending smoke signals to Haiti, where hope is scarce
and smoke signals to the S&P 500
where public corporation lifespans are shrinking.
