A Poem is a Heart in Love

And lost love is a dimly lit city

“Love has come to rule and transform; Stay awake, my heart, stay awake.”
— Rumi

A poem is a heart
in love
that flutters with beauty
races and slows down
falls in love
falls out of love
falls in love again
and skips a beat

When the heart thrives
creativity flourishes
its muse is joyful
the moon is full
the light shines
and the poetry
sings

The heart
pumps enough blood
into its body
so each stanza
is nourished
and alive

When love disappears
heartache follows
the heart mourns
the blood curdles
and abandons
its rhythm
and purpose

Poetry becomes
an empty bed
a burning cigarette
bourbon and beer
a melancholy mood
with dark clouds
blocking the sun

When love disappears
the poet
becomes a shadow
who walks
in a lonely city
with dimly lit lights
and only writes
about being drunk
on grief
and every word
is a tear.
