Down by the river
Where fears evaporate
The wattles whisper stories
At times now out of date.

Frozen footsteps in the sands
Upon the blossoms trodden
When everything was different
And now, mostly forgotten.

Ghostly memories drift along.
The languid and weary creek
Meandering next to the tracks
Where water spirits speak.

If the waters could iterate
Times from long ago
And imbibe into new memories
Ancient tales they know.

When water slaked the thirst
Fish was for sustenance
Fires were for cooking
The rhythm was for dance.

Rituals and ancient rites
Are hidden in the bones
Ethos and concerns
Are mysterious unknowns.

The wind whispers a language
Universal now and then
And the babbling of the waters
Whispers over and over again.

Down by the river
Memories drift away
And float onto another place
And a different day.
