How I came up with the idea of Poetri

2011: 15 years old, with my first computer on my first day of programming

I set up a company for the very first time in 2013. It was called Script Media, and for two years we worked for other companies and/or smaller projects which were easier to manage. Towards the end of 2014, we signed a contract with Universal Music Colombia, scoring our first big client and project. As we got to work, we hired more programmers and at the same time took on more clients, one from Ecuador and others from Colombia; the productivity of the developer team fell, which meant that we failed to meet project deadlines. Over time, our clients began to withdraw their custom. As a result, we had to shut down Script Media two years later, in 2015. I learned several things from this experience:

  • There’s a big difference between being part of a small project compared to a larger one, in terms of budget management, organization, compliance with deadlines, among other things.
  • I failed in that I wasn’t fully aware of what was happening in the team; for all their technical knowledge, the fact is that deadlines were not met and a lack of time and good decision-making led us to failure
  • My lack of experience in that kind of situation was a decisive factor in the mistakes I made, I was under the impression that exponential growth would be a good thing, when in fact steady progression was the way to go

The failure of Script Media and, as such, of Miguel Rengifo became public knowledge. Nonetheless, I continued to come up with and develop my own projects such as Quiickly, I advised some businesses and worked for others, and even kept trying to establish new business ventures, but in the end the past always came back to haunt me.

I lost people who I thought were my friends, I lost professional contacts and doors were closed to me; rumours started up about an unreliable Miguel who never got things done on time. The few friends I had left always stood by me, and saw in me what surely nobody else saw, someone who was learning and, sadly, who had to fail to truly understand.

Three years later, I am back together working with my former partner in Quiickly, and we have begun a new startup called Poetri. In fact, the mission of Poetri is to prevent more people like me from making the kind of mistakes I did, in terms of the development, planning and awareness of what is happening with their development teams.

So, after these mistakes and learning curves, I think a new start is necessary to demonstrate, understand and above all act in the right way. Using what I have learned from this story, I hope to be able to solve any problem that may now present itself.
