A song

By Raymond M. Vince

She was just thirty-five:

I was—well—still alive.

She sat down next to me:

I was drinking G&T.

She asked me what I did.

I smiled my opening bid.

She said, are you MI6?

I frowned, and licked my lips.

Phantom of the night,

Was it all — a dream?

Figment of my mind,

Where — did she go?

She was, she said, a lawyer,

I’m a teacher, I told her;

Her smile was somewhat winning,

My head, oh, was spinning.

Our paths seemed to diverge.

My hopes began to submerge;

But oh, the possibilities.

Could have been serendipity.

Phantom of the night,

Was it all — a dream?

Figment of my mind,

Where — did she go?

She was just thirty-five.

I was— well—still alive.

She sat down next to me.

I was drinking G&T.
