how the earth longs for you

art by Michael McQuarrie

Darling, the blue blue sky will never be blue enough
because it will never hold the blue from your eyes
if only you’d look up into the blue-black bruised sky
his sorrow would fade, and you’d see the glimmer
twinkling starry eyes

Darling, the wind sighs through the trees at night
because it’s trying to find your lover sighs
the wind will never be complete without your moist breath
caressing the sides of his face
so still he restlessly blows from empty place to empty place

Darling, on the beach, the tides rise high
because the ocean has heard that her deepness pales
compared to the depths in your eyes
she’s reaching out for you
to caress you in her watery strides
to kiss your ankles and learn from you the depths of beauty

Darling, every desert is dry
because it’s never known the wetness of your kiss
every mountain rises, strives to be the tallest
simply to catch your attention
every parched stalk of wheat sways in the field
every tree sprouts leaves and flower petals
because the earth wishes it had hair as bounteous and beautiful as yours

Darling, if you ever shed a tear from love
no river will ever again run dry
no thundercloud cry alone
no earthquake shake from seizure of not knowing you
the earth, the ocean, and the sky
would rest as peacefully as I will in your arms tonight
