Better Days
A Poem
--
Please read until the end for the explication!
Lord, I pray for better days…
For smaller mountains
Or mustard faith;
For a lamp to my feet
Or a brighter place;
For room to weep
Or a drier face.
Lord, I pray for quiet nights
For bedtime stories
After pillow fights;
For starry-eyes
But nearer sight;
For fervent prayers
At morning light.
Lord, when will I see better days --
When laments fail
For better praise?
When illness lies
Where better lays?
When better dies
Where better plays?
Lord, when I pray for better days
I pray for straighter,
Wider ways;
For lesser loads
And lighter weighs;
For lower woes
And whiter grays.
Lord I pray for a softer bed
When a hardened day
Leaves a hardened head;
For softer lovin'
What Marvin said?
In fifty years still newly-wed.
Lord, I pray on wetter days
For sturdy waters
And lesser waves
Because even during stressful plays
I still believe in better days!
I’m 23. Life has happened and continues to happen. Good times stand up for the bad times to sit down, for the worse times to shove them to the floor and take their seat. Maybe you who are reading this now are counting down the years, months, and weeks until you can finally get to those better days. I am, too.
We often hear of trials, tribulations, and trying times. We never expect them to really come for us. We watch the news and see what happened to them. Life may not have been perfect or very good, but it was never this bad. You read this now and you probably wonder why you rushed through the best of times, too, huh? Or maybe you didn’t rush… Maybe you just wish you could go back and prepare yourself for the incoming season.
There is something powerful about asking for something so small, but so impactful to the human soul. Instead of soft-penciling a new poem detailing the woes of life with encouragement peppered in, I wanted to graft these attitudes to desire. As I publish more poetry on this platform, you will see that desire is a standard centerpiece in my repertoire.
The first lines of this piece actually began as a prayer I’d whisper to God more than often whenever I found myself in adverse situations (or in any inconvenience, lol). I knew i wanted it to be a poem, I just never got around to writing it until very recently (10 days ago).
I am moving toward a new chapter in my life. One that is about service, , travel, distance, and adventure — and possibly misadventure (it’s literally me we’re talking about). I implore you to get through it and see a better day with me.
