It is time for another Poetry Playground Prompt!

The last prompt led to incredible poetry on the topic of snow.

This Week’s Prompt

Poetry Playground has been open for almost a year. We have seen much astonishing poetry based on forms and themes. One form, however, I have kept away from until now. I was too scared to try it myself, so I was reluctant to ask others to have a go. Well, this week, two of our brilliant poets submitted poems in this form (we have had a few throughout the year), and I decided it was time to make it the prompt. This week’s prompt is to write a villanelle. You can write about anything, but if you would like a theme to inspire you, use Christmas.

Writing a Villanelle

One of the reasons I haven’t written a villanelle before is that I thought the form hard to understand—it is not immediately obvious when reading it. There are lines or rhymes repeated in various places. It turns out it is not so difficult after all.

My explanation is based on the one from this site:
