At times, I wish to escape
To the haven I find most peaceful,
Where I don’t have to get questioned,
Because I know I’ll be welcomed there
With open arms and his charming smile.

When I am confused,
Or I lose my sense of control,
One name shines in my heart:
A light in my mind — his presence,
A beacon of peace and joy.

Whether it be the sacred Janambhoomi,
Where he was born,
Or the enchanting Vrindavan,
Where stories speak of his bravery and power,
He’s supreme and ever-friendly.

Gokul, where he performed his childhood Leelas,
Making ladies go gaga over his antics,
Earning the moniker Makhanchor,
Lord Krishna belongs to everyone.
And you can’t help but fall in love with him.

A part of my pre-teen days
Will always be there.
I can’t escape the magic of Mathura,
Nor can it escape me, because
Of the love I hold for that place.

Three and a half years spent in its embrace,
A true embodiment of spirituality,
Dipped in rich history and culture,
Holding all the rituals together.
Prem Mandir speaks of divinity.
And ISKCON chants of Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

The globe witnessed his magic
When he lifted Govardhan Parbat with his pinky finger,
Making gods bow down.
He’s inescapable and enigmatic.
Trapping everyone with his magnetism.

His laughter can be heard even today
In every lane and every corner
As if he is present among us
Herding cows and playing flute
Between those magnificent peacocks.

If and when I get the chance
Perhaps I would want to go there again
Surrendering myself completely
Singing prayers and hymns of him
Drowning in his world endlessly.

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Mathura is a small town based in Uttar Pradesh, India. It holds a deep meaning as it is the birthplace of Lord Krishna where he spent most of his time before moving to Dwarka where he lived for 96 years and eight months until he was 125 years old. I’ve spent three and half years viz from 2008 to 2011 in the land where he took birth and that has been my favorite place and greatest blessing for many reasons.

Glossary

  • Janambhoomi, Prem Mandir, and ISKCON are all famous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna.
  • Leela means “Divine Play” in Sanskrit.
  • Makhanchor means the one who steals butter. It was a nickname of Lord Krishna because he used to steal butter during his time by breaking the pots of ladies.
  • Govardhan Parbat is a famous mountain that was lifted by him with his pinky finger to save the villagers from the wrath of Lord Indra who invoked rain and thunderstorms because people were not appeasing him.
  • Gokul and Vrindavan are the places where he spent most of his childhood and teenage days.

Thank you Jonny Masters for this prompt. It evoked many memories and emotions that I reminisced once again while penning down this piece.
