I rushed toward the doctor’s office as if fleeing from a death sentence. I stumbled twice while climbing the worn steps, feeling my heart nearly tear through my chest, pounding as if racing against the end. I paid no heed to the pain piercing my body, nor to the steps that seemed to weigh me down more with each ascent. The cold air was insufficient to quench the torrent of sweat pouring down my face. All I wanted was to reach… just to reach. I pushed the clinic door open violently, brushing past those ahead of me without caring about their faces. My knees betrayed me, and I fell before the doctor, raising my terror-stricken gaze to him. He tried to say something, but I interrupted him with a trembling voice that barely reached his ears:
“How can I live without sleep?! I’m certain that if I surrender, my heart will stop!”
The words spilt from my mouth like the last breath of a dying man. The doctor calmly lifted me and guided me to a slanted bed, where I lay down as if falling into a bottomless well. I felt my weary body…
