After Funerals

Grief fills the air
in the form of laughter.
The perfect backdrop
for saying goodbye.
We are gathered here today
to celebrate life
in the midst of death.
An impromptu family reunion.
The group has gotten
smaller
and smaller over time.
We’ve noticed,
but that negativity
can be saved for another day.
The whispers of those
that have already passed on
have embedded themselves
into every crevice of this room.
We can feel their presence
in the music
that fills our ears
and our souls
as we sing away
the sadness
and replace it with
joy.
