Chewing the Fat
They trotted off to the Nags Head
As they were wont to do
Easily led
The golden liquor bidding them come hither
To shelter in good company
Not bothered by the weather
Their wives with wine in hand
In someone’s kitchen, shared their cares
While the guys in beer land
With no intent to proffer theirs
Horse traded stories
And dad jokes
While slagging off the Tories
Unbridled, each, from their ball and chain
They chewed the fat
With no need to give evidence or explain
Intent to wag their non-existent tails
In loosened chat
With no lessons learned
Or masticated fat
This was a 20 minute exercise in a small writing group. The task was to write a short piece in poetry or prose using the word ‘bridle’ and idiom ‘chewing the fat’ as prompts.
