summer carbon

vicious
teeth in the meat of
my palm
a taxi cab screech
90 miles per hour
straight into the
lamppost

smoke curling in a
summer sky
there’s too much heat
nothing captured
carbon release
choking on the
ozone

nightmare
sodden hollows
bones in the swamp
katydids crying
it matches the scream
buried in my
throat

i’m so hungry
i’ll eat anything
live cable wires
honey-coated fingers
crumbs
in this drought, that’s all i
get

forgetting
not something i can do
not now
not here
the heat drags electric fingers
over everything by the
end
