The Watermelon
In Gratitude of Summer Series Pt. 2

I cut open a watermelon today
The first of the year
I held my breath and slowly sliced
Fingers and toes crossed and hope
Like a child still young enough to believe in magic
And bright sun shines on my afternoon tabletop
And beads of red juice well up
And I know my fruit will be sweet
It is like being given a beautiful, simple gift
I has been cold and dark
But the sun is coming in
And the watermelon is sweet
