Upon his bed the old dog rests,
So tired from the day.
The workload on the farm now tests,
Brings out more fur in grey.

The farmer moves beside him,
And strokes his weary back.
A blanket in his arms does swim,
“To help pick up the slack.”

The new day breaks, the old dog sits.
A puppy races ‘round.
With glee and wonder but no wits;
The whole world to be found.

A grumble as the puppy nears,
With energy to play.
The farmer’s whistle pricks the ears,
It’s time to work today.

The puppy nipping at his heel,
So clumsy and unfit.
No skill to show but keen like steel,
Tenacity and grit.

The training days drag longer,
But become more fulfilled.
The two dogs’ bond grows stronger;
The puppy grows more skilled.

The old dog’s mind is tired now,
his whole life’s work complete.
He looks across at his grown pup,
Drifts happily to sleep.

That old dog’s bed lays empty now,
Last working day long gone.
That puppy now is old somehow,
Next a blanket, and so on …

Thanks for reading.

Kind Regards,
Walker
