To me the rose symbolizes the halcyon days

of Youth and the looming threat of Old age.

It makes me think of a woman, what lies between the softness of her thighs, whereas its thorns of her strength. It also reminds of the Japanese aesthetics called wabi-sabi (侘寂), a world view centered on the acceptance of the cycle of growth and decay, transcience and imperfection. It also reminds me of the song «What is a Youth» for the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet written by Eugene Walter and composed by Nino Rota, in which the most beautiful line reads «a rose will bloom, it then will…
