What makes a True poet

Nicolas Cage in Adaptation exemplifying the struggle of writing from the heart

True poetry transcends applause and validation; it speaks through feelings, not words alone. Genuine poets seek connection, not fleeting praise. They understand that poetry, universal and unclaimed, echoes deep sentiments and transforms souls. Good poems stop readers in their tracks, compelling them to re-read, slower each time. They turn skeptics into believers and dogmatics into feelers.

Genuine poets are not beggars; they wholeheartedly believe in the merit of their expression. No true poet would solicit donations or seek validation, as they are solitary in essence, driven by the authenticity of their voice. Monetary contributions should always remain unsolicited, free of guilt, and entirely natural.

Poets never plan to become poets; they discover themselves writing poetry when their back aches and their eyes tire, when the love of their life departs and their heart longs for solace. Poets often write when they least desire it, when their entire being refuses to rest, restless in their chair. Writing is a necessity, not a luxury for poets; they do not see poetry as an opportunity but as a way to get closer to something innate that’s hardly accessible, if only words could let them feel a bit more. Writing is an extension of their body, an extra appendage upon which they rely most.

Poets are magicians in their own right, often unaware of the true impact of their work. They often delete perfectly good poems and have a love-hate relationship with the written word. To them, poetry is not just rebellion, but more of a counter-thought into infinity. Poets aren’t always enamored with words; they simply haven’t figured out how to dance poetry into existence. Their attention is razor-focused on that elusive something within, which wants to escape the poet’s memory and pretend it never existed.

I seek meaning in writing: old, new print, poetry, allegories, tales, absurdism, satire, existentialism, and anything well-crafted. Dystopian fic is alluring!
