“Tonight, in Oakland” by Danez Smith
This was my view while I relaxed after kayaking. I’m trying to get the last fun of the summer packed in, and this was one of those things.
Today’s poem combines themes of blackness, misogyny, and queer identity with the feeling of Oakland.
It’s moving, it’s nuanced, and it reminded that there is so much world I can never come to know.
“Let’s waste the moon’s marble glow
shouting our names to the stars until we are
the stars”
