26 Years

26 years passed fast
after that last grasp at power;
last hour replete with
complete defeat;
last painful refrain,
waning fight drained;
only shame
from lying and hiding

From bottomless blight,
dim became brighter,
lighter became light,
power beyond mine
offered its face,
an outstretched hand,
a place to land;
grace outpaces
willful disgrace.

Gifts of surrender —
clearing tears,
displacing fears,
debts paid in arrears,
off my perch above,
making way for love,
erasing strife,
embracing life,
awakening to hear
a god always near.

Who knew it would last
26 years?
