ah! so you see, my friends!
we are tired
we cannot stand the race any longer
we have outrun ourselves —
the beast inside we tried to quell and quiet has overtaken us,
has shown itself, truer than ever it was!

America!
America the Great and Proud!
The Free!

oh friends, we have not lost the race but to ourselves —
who we have pretended not to be for so long,
from whom we’ve always been running —
and now the hellish thing we have always been is here,
staring back at us with a toothy smile

America!

oh, but we are this beast!
that chews and swallows or spits back out
that breathes down necks
and taunts and teases

America!

a beast is a beast and never will’t be another
so now we must see, dear friends
we must see ourselves

America.

the poorest beast there ever was.
