And the Devil Laughed

I met the devil at a bar one day
I was ready to leave, but he implored me to stay;
“Come sit down”, he said givin’ a wink,
“Let’s buy some time and have ourselves a drink.”

His cool eyes were burning a brightest blue
Hair slicked back, and a necktie too.
“What’s this about you wantin’ to go?
You’ll miss out on my favorite show!”

Time stood still as we sat there drinkin’
That liquor a pourin’, my mind a thinkin’;
“Look up there, what do you see?”
He pointed right up at the ole TV —

Fire, death, lust, and greed
“The sick lives all you mortals lead!”
He chortled away, with spit a spewin’
“Mindless filth, it’s all your doin’!”

“What do you mean?” I asked in a stutter
He spat out some sparks, and stood up to utter:
“You think I’m the cause of all o’ this?
Don’t make me laugh, it’s your abyss!”

I tried to leave, but couldn’t move,
“Hold on now son, I’ve got somethin’ to prove!”
His face a burnin’, skin melted away,
Nothin’ but bone and fire did stay.

“The world blames me for all it’s trouble,
But you’re the ones who tear heaven to rubble!
Just look at the way you treat each other —
Boy, what a laugh! Hatin’ one another…

“You live in misery and blame me for all,
But I’ve got a prophecy to predict your fall:
All the evil you hold inside
Will come out to play, and you can’t hide!”

At that remark I bolted straight out the door,
I didn’t look back, and thought no more.
The devil just stayed and laughed inside;
On fire and thunder, to Hell did he ride.
