Bulbuls

The red-vented bulbuls in the fig tree
always choose the most luscious fruit, ripened to perfection
and leave the smaller, greener figs for me.

I get a little mad sometimes, wish they’d decamp.
But then I hear their cheerful calls
and all is forgiven.

A symbol of love in the poems of the East,
the bulbul is an easy bird to like:
curious and social… and just a little naughty.
