business documents and school books

I heard Marianne Moore quote a Tolstoy
diary about business documents
and school books — the only writings,
Tolstoy says, that aren’t poems. I wonder
if I could write a business document on a lover’s
wheat field skin in a way that tallied up
all the 47 promised kisses a day and accounted
for the evaporation of our bodies into hot tea
kettle boiling when we do that eye lock

thing like licking the flagpole when it’s snowing —
[Dumb Girl, now you can never never
ever look away]
like you can’t back out of
business documents, (but you don’t want to
when whatever you entrepreneured
is abracadabra, but not, never, poetry).

look, I lied about overhearing Marianne, ok?
it’s a pain to eavesdrop on a forty-some-year
dead grave that’s rubbing soft, and
what she said — I read it in a school book,

and then it was no longer poetry. I hope
never to be so cursed or so lucky.
