Do you remember the pine trees
Stark black in the restless night
And the sound of the falling sea?

The time we broke into the little girls’ riding school,
Climbing through the hedges at the back -
Do you remember the pine trees?

Three in the morning and we took two fat ponies
For a gallop, foaming and shivering through the forest,
Stark black in the restless night.

“Nobody else”, I say with certainty, “has ever been
as much fun as we were” — talking aloud, alone to the wind
And the sound of the falling sea.
