Dad…
This one’s for you
Somewhere between
being daddy’s girl
to becoming me
a woman of substance
in my own world
I grew up.
And we grew apart.
Somewhere between
crawling at your feet
to standing on my own
two feet
finding my own ground
I grew up.
And we grew apart.
Somewhere between
this
and that time
I forgot
what I am here today
to recall
and remind.
I remember,
listening to you sing
me, rhythms that chime
ghazals, sonnets and rhymes
we heard them together
every evening
of writers from all times.
Somewhere between
I learned
to be a poet
in these times
Look Dad!
I even wrote a book
in my lifetime.
I dunno if I shared this
with you
but today
I want to —
look at you
and you’ll know
it’s true.
I look like you
walk like you
talk like you
even my likes and dislikes
are like you
your genes best fit the swag of my jeans
I even pose and smile like you.
So Dad…
this one’s for you
I love you
yes I grew up
never apart though
I just grew up
into another version of you.
