Daylight Tangle

A preternatural idiocy,
A blithe entanglement,
A specious rumor.

I wash away the night stains,
the forgotten dreams,
chivalrous episodes askance, adrift
piratical disputations over treasure hordes,
glaum the daylight tangle,
the still shadows drifting, the clouds
whispers of dragons groaning,
the grasping fiat, the last dance of trembling leaves.

Here chaos reigns in golden splendor,
here the byzantine designs falter,
here the maze is constructed,
the minotaur’s cage.

I dream of Memnos while sunlight dithers
the motes playing on ivory winds
hastening to their councils,
while elector-princes and anti-popes
call conclaves to establish right doctrine
as the cardinal points shift
to the rhythm of indeterminate poles
and children whistle tunes
composed by suffragettes and fools.

The minor key persists,
the confusion of mismatched chords.

And I strum, plucking feebly
at the unstrung lyre of the
spinster fates.
