When you awaken to a sick dog —

vomit and shit everywhere —

and after you’ve cleaned the

carpet, the hardwoods,

the bedspread — with a longing look —

and the dog,

you know you have to clear the stench

from the air and your heart,

the crap that has settled in your world —

accept even it,

welcome the smelly darkness that is no longer rotting inside you,

welcome the purging of pain and disappointment,

the release of the past, remnants of dreams decayed,

the clearing of the old putrid moments that no longer nourish you.

Unearth them then wash them away

and open the windows of your heart to welcome the new.

Dreams and loss and the drop back to earth after the dreams are done.

You are cleansed now, grounded in the here and now.

Begin yet again.
