You had to choose the day most
appropriate to sail away
to the tune of a favored song.
How it must have pleased you so
to hear us sing right before
you slipped away so quietly
with a smile and two short breaths.

It was as if you snuck right past
the Spectre’s scythe; he had to turn
and run to catch up with you —
but you had already flown
into the arms of your love
who was waiting patiently
to fly you to eternity.
