The girl born to a dismal fortune

in a family of pigeon trainers

she was a girl of squalor

a girl whose suffering is pedantic,

a girl whose stories needn’t be retold

a girl whose scars are to be hidden

a girl whose honor is not sanctimonious

a girl whose desires are misborn

a girl who tried but could not fly out of her squalor

but her stories did take flight

with the pigeons

as messages tied to their feet

to other girls of squalor
