Footholds

A raven landed on a wire
too thin to firmly grasp
swiveled and hung upside-down
unhappily aghast

grabbed the wire in its beak
left dangling there, a-splay
twice embarrassed, let go, dropped,
flapped and flew away

So wire-walkers we would trek
other worlds, new spaces,
no upside where gravity fails
nor down, but farthest places

to where we would cross, would our
fragile being find –

foothold
