Hate is never overcome by hate. Hate is overcome by love. This is an eternal law. —The Buddha (Dhammapada v. 5)

A traveler left these words behind to point the way
like those that had been left behind on Sinai
though these were not inscribed in stone
because he knew that even stones
would pass away

and love alone remain.

A traveler left these words behind
for any who might follow in his steps
for any who might hope to find the path to peace
even though he knew there is no path to peace

that does not pass through pain.

A traveler left these words behind to point the way
like footprints left in sand
although he knew they would be covered up by wind

and washed away by rain.
