Focail do a Chara

From the NICU

She tries to draw a breath,
but the stale air stops at her lips.
Fear suffocates her and she stares
at the monitor,
the display that separates life from death.
Breathe, she wills the lungs.
Beat, she wills the heart.
Fight, she wills the tiny body,
as panic chokes in her throat.
The sudden alarm startles and shatters.
Denial.
