Goodness

Toxic, dangerous, evil, and unkind
this is the world we live in
though on the same side
we call them enemies
they whom we brush our shoulders with
we greet them and smile, courtesy they say
or often we simply ignore them
they become invisible, what indifference
but it doesn’t help us, does it
being as toxic, dangerous and unkind
as the world we live in

No, they are not your enemies
not the people on your side,
not the people behind you
not those whose backs you see
and perhaps now you do see
we aren’t on a ring, this isn’t a match
we are on a long road, running
it’s a journey
the people you face each day
no, they are not your enemies

Your paths might have just crossed
they intend you no harm
if you ever collide
is it because they crossed your line
or has the path just become more narrow
it could be either but would it hurt
if you believe the latter
because anyway
your paths might have just crossed

And in this long road
when you speed up or slow down
or make a turn, take a different path
they probably won’t be there
until your paths cross again
so would you be so kind
to believe in goodness
and to murder no souls
with the sword of hatred
which you honed with your heart
would you be so kind
in this world we live in
toxic, dangerous, evil and unkind
