The leaves of last autumn have collected in a few scattered piles.
An unused broom stands in the corner and a single, bare lightbulb hangs
from the ceiling. The walls are stucco and stained from years of exhaust
and oil changes. Cars and tractors that were here are now gone.

Tossed on the floor is a repair slip from a long-closed Buick dealer and a breakdown report from a car he’d had towed from the New York Thruway. The late afternoon sun streams in through the doors, out of frame, into the past.
