1963 March on Washington, U.S. Information Agency. National Archives and Records Administration. Public domain.

I honor the bonds forged of effort and strain, flesh and blood,
great moments carved from the steps of those who have passed through these doors, walked these streets,
the devotion of women and men who stood and fought,
used their bodies as shields and words as weapons, held their ground and reclaimed their moments,
people on the right side — the only side —
of the past, present, and the future — today,
the heroes in tomorrow’s history books,
those who marched with their feet, their words, their voices, their purse-strings,
the courageous,
the persistent,
the humble,
the bold,
those who built power from sheer will, held together with determination and righteous anger,
stepping out, stepping forward, stepping over.
I honor the steps of those who walked these streets in the power of miraculous and unexpected love and grace.
