I Won’t Say

I’m a stepping stone,
Down the stair I lay,
Steady, mute, small, alone,
All the weight I bear, still I won’t say.

Up the strangers climb,
Down from the stair, I pray,
The foot dust on me rime,
All the dirt I take, still I won’t say.

Battered by the boot,
Down at the stair I wither away,
Yet I sit, eternally at the stair-foot,
All the distress I swallow, still I won’t say.

I’m a stepping stone,
Down the stair I lay.
