Inherited Fabric

I wore her skirt today
the navy blue one
was always too big
but now it hugs my belly
like I imagine it hugged hers
extra fabric sways with each step

I have a pair of her shoes
colorful flats
too big for my feet by half a size
don’t wear them often
but can’t imagine parting
with them either

never wanted to fill her shoes
until I did

Still unraveling the thread
of our lineage
discovering
what lives in the fabric
of this inherited blood
unravel the pieces
I don’t want to carry any more
keeping the fabric
to stitch something new
