Just A Straight White Man

I’m just a straight white man, why should I make a stand?

I’m not racist but I’m not black, I’ve never had a whip across my back

I’ve never been beaten to an inch of my life for looking up from my toes and catching someone’s eye

I’ve never heard strangers shout across the street, “nigger, coon, menace or thief”

Why should I stand up for someone’s race? I’m just a straight white man, just another face

I’m not sexist but I’m not a girl, I’ve never been groped, I’ve never been raped

I’ve never been told the best I can do is work in an office making a brew

I’ve never been asked to get out my tits, no one has ever threatened to remove my bits

Why should I stand up for someone’s sex? I’m just a straight white man, the problem is theirs

Just A Straight White Man

I’m not homophobic but I’m not gay, no-one’s ever presumed that I must have aids

I’ve never been called a poofter or a queer nor had someone shout, the paedophile’s here

I’ve never been told that I can’t get married because it’s Harry met Sally, not Harry met Harry

Why should I stand up for someone’s sexual preference? I’m just a straight white man, I have no reference

I’m not xenophobic but I’m from the UK, I’ve never been told, I’m not welcome to stay

I’ve never been accused of taking up space or sponging off the government to feed my own race

I’ve never been scorned for speaking on a bus in a language that isn’t native to us

Why should I stand up for someone’s nationality? I’m just a straight white man, I’m not causing the brutality

I’m just a straight white man, why should I make a stand?

I AM a straight white man, I am lucky in so many ways but lack of equality will kill us all one day

I AM a straight white man, I have nothing to fear except war and division that will bring us all to tears

I AM a straight white man, I sit as King but it isn’t fun pulling all the strings

When all I can see is the torture and pain, that my friends, not so lucky experience each day

When all I can hear are the cries of a tortured soul asking for help from those who rule

When all I can touch is unjustified shame as victims feel like they are to blame

But I can see the strength in the eyes of the oppressed minorities who fill me with pride

All who are burdened and all those deprived must not fight alone, I will stand by their side

I am just a man, I’m straight and I’m white but I am a HUman, I must do what’s right
